A: I am going to try and update it every Sunday night. I may miss that
deadline every now and then because I am also going through pilot
training right now, but if I do miss it, I will post something about
when you can expect to see the next comic.
Q: How do you draw the comic?
A: I do a lot of it the old fashioned way and I start with paper and pencil.
I draw the first sketches with a blue pencil and then go back over them
all with pen. I think scan the images into my computer and use Photoshop
to add the backgrounds and the color.
Q: How long does it take you to draw a strip?
A: The really depends on the strip. The ones with multiple
backgrounds can take up to 10 hours of work while the simpler ones
I can finish in around 5 hours.
Q: How long have you been drawing?
A: I really have been drawing my whole life, but I didn’t really
get too serious about it until college when some friends saw what I was
doodling in class and told me I should do more.
Q: What art classes have you taken?
A: None, actually. I am a completely self taught artist and even
taught myself to use Photoshop and to write html code. The biggest thing
I would advocate for people wanting to learn how to draw is PRACTICE!!
That will make all the difference.
Q: Where did you come up with the name “Really Ideal”?
A: I originally thought of the idea in one of my Political Science
classes in college when we were debating the differences between political
realists and idealist. One of my friends took the realist side while I
aligned myself more with the idealists.
Q: Are your characters based on real people?
A: When I first came up with the idea (as I talked about in the previous
question), I asked my friend Steve what he thought about the idea. He was
very excited about it and for a long time, I modeled Jaden after myself and
Blake after him. However, as I started writing more of the comic and thinking
about where I wanted to take it, the farther away the characters have moved
from the people who inspired them. Kirsten was also originally modeled after
a friend, but her character is now very different and probably an amalgamation
everything I have learned about women.
Q: Can I be in the comic?
A: In short, no. I have already written out close to a hundred comics
in storyboard form and as fun as it is to do cameos, what I am trying to do
with the comic requires me to keep it submerged in the world I have created
around it.
Q: Are you single?
A: Nope! I am in a wonderful relationship with Kim and even though there
are a lot of miles between us right now, things are still going very well
between us. Sorry girls!
